Managing The Emotions Of Moving

In my experience with many seniors, a home represents a place where they have raised a family and created lasting memories. For them, downsizing often means more than simply changing their address. As homeowners prepare to move, they start to sift through decades of accumulated belongings. Each item carries memories and significance, which is why this process can be so emotional.  Here are 4 things to do to help you manage with your emotions:

  1. Don’t do it alone:  Moving into a smaller living space can be a major task at any age. Getting help from friends or family can ease the physical challenges and provide emotional support. Additionally, some individuals may find it helpful to hire a senior move manager who can oversee the entire process.  There are many to choose from and I can help.
  2. Allow yourself to feel your emotions: It’s completely understandable to feel a mix of emotions during a move. Acknowledging these feelings can really make the transition smoother. You might find yourself feeling sad as you reflect on the memories tied to your home. During these moments, it can be incredibly helpful to reach out to a friend, family member, or your agent.  It is important to have someone you trust who can lend a listening ear. I always tell my clients that it’s okay to express what you’re going through.
  3. Stay the course:  It’s important to keep a focus on the future.  Downsizing will have fewer responsibilities and all more time to enjoy friends and loved ones.  You will find new friends to mix in with the old.  New communities will offer activities and adventures.  Make a list of reasons to be excited about the change and plans in your future helps in moving along.
  4. Start small:  You will find downsizing will be overwhelming.  My suggestion is to focus and start on smaller and easier items.  Try focusing on one drawer and a time or one cabinet.  Then start with the smaller closet.  In doing this you will find the task being easier, quicker to rid of items providing a sense of accomplishment to tackle your next project.
