What should you do with the possessions that aren’t moving with you?

In my last blog, I discussed managing the emotions of moving.  Now that you’ve made the commitment and are ready to relocate, what should you do with the possessions that aren’t moving with you?  Below are some ideas for handling items in your home.

  • Give to a relative:  Family members may find some of your unwanted items useful or sentimental. When sorting through those items it is strongly suggested involving a family member to help you determine which items to give away.
  • Garage sales and estate sales:  Garage sales are a great way to get rid of items and can provide you with extra cash that could go toward something new, or minor repairs.  I discuss this option with my clients.  As your agent I have a list of professional organizers who can help host the sale at your home or online. I suggest in speaking with your agent first about which items you plan to sell, as you might discover that what you think is valuable may not be, and vice versa!
  • Charitable donations:  I am one who tries to give back and will personally donate items to local organizations.  Charitable organizions like a local church, Goodwill, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more are among those organizations.  These organizations can easily be found online if your agent doesn’t have a list to share. What is wonderful about some of these organizations is they will come to your home for pick-up.  Some may require drop-offs.
  • Junk removal services:  A quick and efficient option is to hire a junk removal service to come to your home and take away the items you no longer need. They usually charge based on the volume of items being removed and may have additional fees for specific items like paint, oil, tires, etc. For disposal of hazardous items, check with your town and local management facilities for cost-effective options.
  • Self-storage:  I have had clients who prefer to keep items in storage “just in case,”.   This is an option for those who struggle to make immediate decisions.  While self-storage is an option, it’s not always a favorite of mine.  This reason being is it may become an added expense in the long run if those items are stored for a long amount of time.  I urge my clients to keep in mind that if the items are not of real value, ultimately it will likely be items that you will throw items away.  Make sure not to chase good money after bad if you plan to be on a budget.
